FAQ
Dogs and cats, like their progenitors, are carnivores. Their short digestive tracts and high acidic stomach juices are designed by nature to digest raw food.
Cooking meat at high temperatures destroys the essential nutrients, enzymes and amino acids that our pets need. Why reduce the nutrients when you do not have to? While a properly balanced home-cooked diet will be superior to commercial dry kibbles, Fidelis Meats believes that pets truly thrive on a wholesome and balanced raw diet.
For some pet owners, the idea of feeding raw can be unsettling. However, it is the most natural way for our pets to eat. Many who have made the switch report significant improvements in their pets’ health and vitality. Overcoming the initial hesitation may take time, but once you experience the benefits, you’re unlikely to turn back.
Benefits of raw food for pets include:
- Healthy Skin

We usually will suggest a straight switch as the easiest way to transition for healthy pets. We have had much success with this method since we started. But if you are concerned that it may not be ideal for your pet, you can always do a gradual transition by adding a bit at every meal before switching over entirely. How much to add will be based on your own comfort level.
A switch in diet is a drastic change for your pet. While most pets transition without a problem, a minority of pets that have been fed a whole life of kibble may experience some problems initially. Runny stools, constipation, and vomiting may occur. If your pet experiences any of these side effects without clear signs of distress and is of its usual high energy self, it is alright to continue observing for a day or two. However, if your pet is lethargic and clearly not well, please seek vet advice immediately. Knowing the possible symptoms beforehand will result in greater success for the well informed owner.

We will start your pet off with just a single protein patty with ground bones in the 1st week to get your pet accustomed to its new diet. This will allow your pet to stabilize its digestive system and return to its natural acidic state. If your pet is coping well on the first protein, a second protein is introduced in the 2nd week followed by a 3rd and so forth till your pet is eating the full variety of proteins for maximum benefit. At any point when your pet gets a bad reaction to a new protein, return to the previous routine when your pet is doing fine and wait till all is normal before trying again on the next protein.

All our patties, except for Uno Beef and Uno Beef BARF, contain ground bones, making them unsuitable for cooking. Uno Beef and Uno Beef BARF are the only boneless options, specifically designed to be paired with Raw Meaty Bones. These two products can be cooked and are particularly popular among customers who appreciate the quality of our meats but prefer not to feed raw.
Thawing and refreezing food is safe from the food safety perspective when done correctly. The only detriment may be the taste quality for discerning gourmets.
Puppies and kittens will be ready for raw food once they are weaned. This will usually be between 8-10 weeks for puppies and 4-6 weeks for kittens.
Every pet is an individual with differing needs. With raw feeding, the usual starting guide will be about 2.5-3% of the dog’s ideal adult body weight depending on the weight of your dog. Cats, smaller dogs below 10 kg and active dogs need a higher percentage while medium to large dogs and senior dogs need a lower percentage.
Fidelis Meats recommend using 2.5% as a starting guide and adjusting accordingly to the pet’s weight gain or loss to achieve their ideal weight.

The notion that chicken bones are dangerous for dogs is only part of the story. Cooked chicken bones can indeed be hazardous, as they tend to splinter and may cause gut perforations. However, raw meaty bones, such as chicken necks, are pliable and soft, making them beneficial for dogs. They help strengthen jaw muscles, clean teeth, and provide essential minerals, contributing to a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.
We do not offer a Pre-portioned plan for Cats as they can be very particular about their food. What we offer instead is for you to order the patties in individual packs according to your preference. Our patties for cats are available in individual packs of 80gx2 so you can try them out in minimal quantities to see if your cat/kitten takes to them before committing to a bigger order. Our standard products for cats will have 'For Cats' suffixes and can be found under Chicken, Duck, Beef and Lamb. The list of ingredients can be found on their individual product page.
The concept of "complete and balanced" can be controversial within the raw feeding community, with two main schools of thought. We cater to both perspectives. Our patties with the “BARF” suffix are formulated to be complete and balanced according to NRC guidelines. Meanwhile, our patties without vegetables align with the whole prey model, offering balance for those who subscribe to this
approach.
UNO is our signature single protein prefix for our customers to identify a product that is made with only one animal protein source.
This is essential for pets with allergies as it eliminates the guesswork for owners trying to identify what their pet may be allergic to.
A variety of single protein diets is the preferred choice for raw feeders as it provides the widest mix of different proteins and organs available while still mimicking the whole prey method of feeding their pets.
FRANK is our prefix to identify a product that consists of more than one animal protein source.
FRANK is modeled after the 'Frankenprey' model of feeding your pet a diet consisting of parts from different animals to form a whole prey.
We’re pleased to inform you that all our deliveries are handled in-house using our own freezer van to ensure an unbroken cold chain. We operate on fixed delivery days and times for different areas. After you place your order, we’ll contact you to arrange your delivery.
If you’re not home at the time of delivery, we can pack your order in a cooler box with ice and leave it at your door, provided this arrangement is made in advance and you’re comfortable with it. Our cooler boxes are thoroughly tested to keep the patties frozen for up to 10 hours, with a $5 refundable deposit. We typically do a 1-to-1 exchange for cooler boxes on subsequent deliveries.
